HOMES OF THE FUTURE.

Every building on the planet must be ‘net zero carbon by 2050 to keep global warming below 2°C - UN new report.

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) has emerged as an innovative alternative material to steel/concrete in building construction, given its relatively low carbon footprint, not to mention its high strength-to-weight ratio, simple installation, and aesthetic features.

After water, concrete is the most widely used substance on the planet. But its benefits mask enormous dangers to the planet, to human health – and to culture itself. If the cement industry were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter in the world - behind China and the US.

The average global cement production in the last decade has been 4.12 billion tonnes per year. For every tonne of cement produced according to the IPCC Report, there is a one and quarter tonnes equivalent of CO2 released. 4.12 billion tonnes of cement multiplied by 1.25 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of cement produced gives an eye-watering 5.15 billion tonnes of CO2 emitted from cement production each year over the last 10 years. To put it in context, if cement production were a country, it would be the world's third-largest emitter.

The rammed-earth process has the lowest environmental impact of all building techniques currently used in the commercial building industry. Low construction material cost - Dirt is available everywhere and is usually inexpensive if not free. YellowGrids is rethinking the future of affordable housing construction on a warming planet by going back to bioclimatic vernacular architecture

But all buildings today and in the future with heights under 63 feet (19 m) can be built with rammed earth walls, compressed earth blocks, and cross-laminated timber. The finished building is awesomely more grandeur than cement concrete construction and cheaper to build. But most importantly they are affordable thanks to their low material cost. Dirt is available everywhere and is usually inexpensive if not free.
